You can use the app without giving us anything
An account is optional. Without one, your saved words, study progress and settings never leave your phone, and we hold no information about you at all.
What we collect if you create an account
An account turns on cloud backup and syncing between devices. In that case we store:
- Your email address, to identify your account and send confirmation or password-reset messages.
- Your password, handled by our authentication provider and stored only as a cryptographic hash. We never see or store your actual password.
- Your vocabulary: the words you save, definitions you type yourself, the language each word belongs to, and your review progress and timestamps.
We do not collect your name, location, contacts, photos, phone number, advertising identifiers, or usage analytics, and we do not use cookies for tracking.
What stays only on your device
Your language choice, reading text size, speech speed, and the list of articles you recently opened are stored on your device and are never sent to us.
Deleted words are kept for 30 days
When you delete a saved word it is hidden immediately and can be restored from Recently deleted for 30 days, so an accidental deletion is recoverable. After that it is permanently erased and cannot be recovered.
Services we send data to
- Supabase
- Hosts our database and handles sign-in. Your account and vocabulary are stored there.
- DeepL
- Provides sentence translation. When you tap to check a sentence's meaning, that sentence is sent to DeepL to be translated. Only sentences you explicitly ask about are sent.
- Wikipedia
- Contacted when you open an article from the built-in library.
- Websites you choose to open
- If you paste a link, the app fetches that page so it can be read. In the browser version this request may pass through a public proxy service to work around browser restrictions.
- Your device's text-to-speech
- Used when you tap the speaker icon. This is provided by your phone's operating system; depending on your device settings, your manufacturer may process the text in their cloud.
We have no control over how these third parties handle data, and we suggest reading their own privacy policies.
Why we are allowed to hold this
We process your data to provide the features you asked for — an account you can sign in to, and a vocabulary list synced across your devices. If you delete your account, we stop.
How long we keep it
Your account and vocabulary are kept until you delete them. Deleted words are kept for 30 days as described above. If you delete your account, everything associated with it is removed from our systems.
Your choices and rights
- Export your data. The Vocab tab has a Back up button that writes your entire vocabulary to a file you control.
- Delete individual words at any time from the Vocab tab.
- Delete your account and all its data from the Account tab in the app, or by following the instructions at Delete your account.
- Ask us anything about your data by emailing soxdesk.app@gmail.com.
Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, or restrict the use of your personal data. Email us and we will help.
Children
Viet Reader is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with access controls that restrict each account's records to that account. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
International transfers
Our servers may be located in a different country from you. By using an account, you understand your data may be processed outside your country of residence.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
